Grinding It Out in Trinidad: How Pakistan Took Control on Day Two

At the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad, that exact brand of discipline took center stage. After Pakistan's pace attack wrapped up the remaining West Indies tail early in the day, the visitors seized the momentum with the bat and finished Day Two of the first Test in a commanding position.

At stumps, Pakistan stood at 199/3 in 48 overs, trailing West Indies by 112 runs with seven first-innings wickets remaining. Bad light brought proceedings to an early close, but Pakistan walked off having dictated much of the day's tempo.

The Morning Burst: Seamers Clean Up West Indies for 311

Resuming their first innings, West Indies were hoping to push their total well beyond the 350 mark.

Instead, Pakistan's pace battery came out with a clear plan and executed it with relentless precision, bowling the hosts out for 311 in 98.5 overs.

Shai Hope anchored the West Indies innings brilliantly with a patient 92 off 182 balls, while Kavem Hodge provided substantial resistance with 84.

Pakistan's seamers eventually broke through.

Mohammad Ali led the attack with an outstanding spell, finishing with figures of 4/50 from 21.5 overs. He received excellent support from Mohammad Abbas, whose disciplined line and length produced 3/63, while Khurram Shahzad added two crucial wickets to prevent the West Indies lower order from extending the total.

With the hosts dismissed for 311, Pakistan's batters were handed an opportunity to take control.

Masood and Imam Build a Monumental Partnership

Pakistan suffered an immediate setback when Azan Awais fell for a nine-ball duck, bowled by Kemar Roach, with the score on just one.

Rather than allowing the early wicket to trigger a collapse, Imam-ul-Haq and Shan Masood responded with a superb display of classical red-ball batting.

The pair constructed a magnificent 155-run partnership for the second wicket, steadily wearing down the West Indies attack and transforming Pakistan's position.

Imam-ul-Haq displayed tremendous defensive resolve and tactical clarity, striking seven boundaries on his way to 63 off 102 balls before Shamar Joseph finally broke the partnership.

At the other end, Shan Masood remained firmly in control.

The left-hander produced a commanding unbeaten 88 from 137 deliveries, including 11 boundaries, leaving himself only 12 runs short of a Test century when bad light ended play.

Babar Azam contributed 23 before falling to Jayden Seales, after which Salman Ali Agha joined Masood and safely negotiated the remaining deliveries.

The Verdict

Day Two belonged to Pakistan, but the first Test remains finely positioned.

The bowlers completed their job by dismissing West Indies for 311, before the 155-run partnership between Shan Masood and Imam-ul-Haq gave Pakistan control of the innings after Azan Awais' early dismissal.

Masood's unbeaten 88 now places him at the center of Day Three. If he converts his start into a century and Pakistan's middle order builds around him, the visitors will have an opportunity to erase the remaining 112-run deficit and establish a meaningful first-innings advantage.

For West Indies, early wickets on Day Three are essential if they want to prevent Pakistan from turning a strong position into complete control of the Test.
